Mizuno Golf Clubs Do Well At Harbor Town Taking 4 of Top 5 Spots

Both Brian Gay and Luke Donald play Mizuno golf clubs, and they took 1st and 2nd place at the Verizon Heritage at the Harbor Town Golf Links on Sunday. Brian Gay broke Loren Robert’s 1996 tournament record by 1 stroke, by shooting -20. He won by a very wide margin—10 strokes over Luke Donald and Briny Baird who tied for 2nd.

Harbor town has tight fairways and small greens. It’s not as long as many courses, so it sets up well for a guy like Brian Gay who hits the ball straight and hits his irons accurately. Loren Roberts who previously held the tournament record is also known for his very accurate irons. Lee Janzen and Todd Hamilton also play Mizuno irons, even though they’re not staff players for Mizuno. They both tied for fourth place. So, on a tight course, with small greens, it seems Mizuno irons are ideal. Four of the top five finishers played Mizuno irons.

Here’s what was in Brian Gay’s bag this week:

Driver TaylorMade R9 (9.5°) w/ Fujikura Motor shaft
Fairway Woods Tour Edge Exotics CB2 (13°)
Hybrids 20° Mizuno CLK Fli-Hi
Irons MX long irons (3,4), MP mid / short irons (5-PW)
Wedges 56° and 59° Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled
Putter Bettinardi C-Series putter

This is Brian Gay’s 2nd tour vicory. He won in Mexico last year. It’s kind of funny that he uses clubs from four different companies, but clearly it works for him. Luke Donald plays only Mizuno golf clubs, including the Mizuno MP-600 Fast Track driver. He’s more the guy that they want to see succeed, or at least expect to succeed. They include his diary entries on their website.

Here’s a tally of the clubs that were in the winner’s bag so far in the 2009 season on the PGA Tour:
Ping – 1
Nike – 2
TaylorMade – 5
Callaway – 2
Cobra – 2
Titleist – 2
Mizuno – 1
